No Stefan for me

April 23rd, 2010 | By Christine in designers, events | 1 Comment »

Oh, WOE. Way to be suddenly brought down immediately from that last post! I’ve just remembered that Stefan Sagmeister (whom I revere very much) was supposed to speak at FIT sometime this school year. My momentary excitement that I hadn’t yet missed it plummeted when I realized that it’s happening on the night of the Pratt Show‘s Friends and Family Reception. Do the FIT kids really not have anything to do at this busy time of year?!

I suppose I shouldn’t be posting this then. If you are friend or family and are tempted to skip the Pratt Show for this, I shall never forgive you! Although I can’t say that I blame you. Just send over a nice bottle of milk tea if you are so inclined, and then we’ll be square.

CreativeMornings with Oliver Jeffers

April 23rd, 2010 | By Christine in artists, books, events, illustration | 2 Comments »

Time for another break!

The day started early, but it started marvelously, because it was Swiss Miss’s CreativeMornings time again, and this time it was none other than my hero, Oliver Jeffers! This was very special for me because this is the tag I wore for the first CreativeMorning that I attended, which featured Michael Bierut. The tag read ‘If I could ask for a CreativeMorning speaker it would be:’

I suppose it wasn’t entirely fair that I wrote Oliver’s name, because I knew that Tina knew Oliver lives in Brooklyn when I wrote this. Ah well, no apologies for cheating.

Anyway, it was a lovely talk hosted at HarperCollins on the 9th floor. Oliver gave a funny presentation about his life and his work, many things that I’d known before, but also many interesting details that I was pleased to learn. I can’t wait until the video is up on the CreativeMornings site.

One piece of wisdom that I really liked was that he said in deciding to move out of Northern Ireland, he chose to take the bigger challenge by moving to New York, rather than London or anywhere ‘easier.’ He said that he tries to do this with many things, like going after the bigger publishing houses and working his way down from there, since it makes sense to try to go for where you want to end up. In other words, dream big and act big! I like. Here are some photos:

This is where he started, on Earth.

Much better photos can be found on the CreativeMornings Flickr page, one of which I stole here. I’m the one with the red coat hanging on the back of my chair. Is that what my hair really looks like from the back??

I owe Tina a huge thanks for adding me to the list after she’d already submitted it to the HarperCollins security people (they’re very strict with safety, it ain’t no joke!), so thanks Tina! Also thanks to Oliver for signing a book for a special friend and for always being so nice to me :)

Like many others, it was a great day to be in New York City.

Okay, just one more distraction, which Nina just showed me. Watch full screen for best effect, the creator urges you! Description reads, ‘A day in the life of New York City, in miniature.’

Lady Danville at Rockwood Music Hall

April 21st, 2010 | By Christine in concerts/shows, music, videos | No Comments »

Hello, my brain is fried, so I shall take a quick break and write a bit about the Lady Danville show that happened on Monday at Rockwood Music Hall.

As usual, the boys delivered an amazing show! I caught all songs except for two on my camera, which you can see on my newly created YouTube channel. My favorites are posted just below. (Songs I missed recording were the Lily Allen cover and ‘Tired Magician,’ toward the beginning of the set. Which is too bad, because they had such great energy during the cover. I didn’t know I would end up taking that many, but once I started, I didn’t want to stop!)

This is a new song called ‘Better Side,’ which I had never heard before. They said it was inspired by their new tour van, Brenda.

Another new song called ‘End of the World.’ I love the story this one tells.

A song called ‘Cars,’ which has been a favorite of mine for the past few weeks.

And some photos:

In case you are unfamiliar, that’s Dan on the guitar, Matthew on the cajon, and Michael on the keys.

Gotta love Dan’s bowtie!

Alrighty, back to work I go. If you want to find out more info about the remaining East Coast Tour dates, check out their MySpace and send them some love via Twitter.

Lady Danville in NY

April 14th, 2010 | By Christine in concerts/shows, music, videos | No Comments »

I wish that I could say that I didn’t care
I wish that I could say that I don’t believe
Talking to myself in my underwear
But I could never leave

Scoring up the points for sleepless nights doing school work, but listening to this song on repeat puts a pretty big smile on my face. What puts an even bigger smile on my face is the fact that Lady Danville is coming to New York and various other towns for their first ever East Coast Tour.
